A printable Advent activity calendar: time together every day, with nothing to buy
- Time together every day, not one more thing: 5 to 30 minutes to make something, solve a riddle, do something kind for someone, cook or simply slow down together.
- Nothing to buy: paper, round-tip scissors, a little glue and whatever is in your kitchen. The recipes need no oven and no cooking.
- The ritual is ready to go: cut-out cards, backs numbered 1 to 24, fold-up envelopes and a strip where your child colors in each day’s box.
- Variety that lasts 24 days: 6 crafts, 6 riddles, 6 kindness challenges, 3 recipes and 3 quiet moments, never two cards of the same type in a row.
- Flexible on busy evenings: the order is only a suggestion, so swap a card whenever you need to; riddles take 5 minutes.
- Designed with safety in mind: no candles or flames, knife and stove for adults only, a “with an adult” symbol, and a seated version of every active game.
- For every kind of family: the cards say “an adult”, never “mom” or “dad”, and name no figure or character.
- Use it again: the file is undated, and the “Our holiday memories” page is there to reread next year.
Exactly what you get
- 4 PDF files: US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) and A4 (210 × 297 mm), each in color and in light ink (white backgrounds, fine lines).
- 18 pages per file: cover; 6-step instructions, a key to the 5 card types and safety notes; 24 illustrated cards, 4 per page, with cutting lines, each card page followed by a page of its numbered backs, mirrored for double-sided printing (12 pages); fold-up envelopes with template and steps (2 pages); a 24-box strip to color; an “Our holiday memories” page with 8 prompts.
- Every card has a title, short instructions written to the child, the materials, the time needed and, where needed, the “with an adult” symbol and a safety line. Riddle answers are printed upside down.
- From December 1 to 24, a few examples: the 24-day paper chain, a cut-paper snowflake, hand shadow theater with a battery light, banana and oat bites, a blanket fort, an accordion paper tree, a paper lantern with no candle, a star hunt.
- No dates, no brands, no movie characters, no religious figures, no screen required.
Who it’s for
For parents, grandparents and caregivers who want to count down to the holidays together without spending more. For children aged 4 to 10, with an adult, and the whole household. For teachers and childcare leaders looking for one short activity a day in December.
Who it’s not for
Not for anyone who wants a calendar to fill with chocolates or small gifts. Not for anyone expecting a physical product: this is a PDF you print yourself. Not for anyone looking for an app, videos or religious content. Not for teens or adults on their own: the cards are written for children aged 4 to 10.
Questions and answers
There are free lists online. Why pay? A list gives you ideas. This is ready to use: 24 illustrated cut-out cards, numbered backs, fold-up envelopes, a coloring strip and a memories page, in color and in light ink.
My child is 4. Will it work? Yes, with an adult. The “with an adult” symbol marks the steps the adult does. Children up to 10 enjoy it too, with the riddles, challenges and recipes.
I don’t have time every evening. Cards take 5 to 30 minutes. On a busy night, pick a riddle or swap the card.
Do I need to buy supplies? No: paper, round-tip scissors, glue or tape, crayons and what’s in your kitchen.
I only have a black-and-white printer. Use the light-ink version: white backgrounds, fine lines.
I can’t print double-sided. Print single-sided: the card pages, then the back pages separately; cut out the backs and glue them onto the cards. If your printer does double-sided, choose “flip on long edge”: each number lands behind its card.
Letter or A4? You get both. Letter is the size used in the US and Canada; A4 everywhere else.
We have our own December traditions. The cards name no figure or character, so they fit alongside whatever your household already does.
What about allergies? Page 2 asks you to check everyone’s allergies and adapt the ingredients. No recipe contains alcohol, pork or gelatin.
And next year? The file is undated: just print it again. One purchase, no subscription, for your family or your classroom.
